I'm unsure about landlines but this makes more sense with mobile devices.

I have wondered - when a mobile phone wants to connect to another phone via cells in a particular geographic area, could this be just an awareness of the cell being located and your device being 'found', is the brain communicating with electromagnetic waves being sent through the air? Could this be an aspect of an extended mind in the environment.
